Why headlights turn yellow and cloudy

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic with a thin factory UV coating. Ontario sun, road salt and gravel wear that coating off, and the bare plastic underneath oxidizes — first a light haze, then the yellow, frosted look that kills your light output at night. Wipes and toothpaste tricks polish the surface for a few weeks; they cannot remove the dead layer or replace the UV barrier. Restoration does both.

The payoff is practical: clearer lenses put measurably more light on dark roads, the car looks years newer from the front, and you skip paying several hundred dollars per replacement housing.

The headlight restoration process, step by step

About an hour per pair, start to finish. Same process on a coupe, an SUV or a work van.

    Inspect the lens

    Every job starts with an honest check: how deep is the oxidation, is the lens cracked, is there moisture sealed inside the housing? Restoration fixes surface damage — if the problem is internal, you hear it before any work starts.

    Mask the paint

    Painter's tape goes around every edge of both headlights. Sandpaper never touches your paint — the masking stays on from the first pass to the last.

    Wet sand in stages

    The dead, UV-burnt layer of plastic is sanded away wet, stepping through progressively finer grits. Each stage removes the scratches of the one before it, until the lens is uniformly smooth.

    Compound

    A machine polisher and cutting compound take the sanded lens from frosted to transparent, working the whole surface evenly so there are no cloudy patches left in the corners.

    Polish to optical clarity

    A finishing polish refines the plastic until light passes through cleanly again. This is what puts your low beams back on the road instead of scattering them into fog.

    Seal against UV

    The step the parking-lot kits skip. A UV-resistant sealant is applied to the finished lens — it blocks the sunlight that caused the yellowing, which is why this restoration lasts years instead of months.

How long restored headlights last
